People say a rider’s trip and foodie’s roam goes beyond imagination.
I am in Bangalore for more than 6 years now. This colourful cosmopolitan city gives a diverse experience when it comes to dine and wine. However, somewhere I was always searching the most authentic one. Being a big fan of Dosa, I kept a sharp eye on the best in this city. Down the line, I realized that there should be some flavour that’s still missed. In my quest, Tried dosa delicacies in Tirumala (Andhra Pradesh), Tirpur, Yercad, Dhrampuri, Hosur, Salem (all in TamilNadu), Mysore , Coorg, Begaum(all Karnataka) among other cities, some even in north India . These includes ‘Mysore Masala’ , ‘Chettinadu Style’, ‘Andhra Style Soft’ and the road side ’99 Style’. I even tried it at Taj and Portarico. But the best in India is finally found in a small town of Davanagere . Widely known as Davanagere Benne Dosa. With all due respect this is simply the best and beyond comparison to any other South Indian Style.
So, I being a foodie at heart and Rider by choice was looking for a chance to reach Davanagere on my Machine and taste the best Dosa of the Nation. One fine day my friend invited me to his marriage and the party happened to be in Davanagere. Wow, two opportunities together.
On a nice Saturday morning, along with my friend, I took my machine and started riding on NH4. It is always advisable to start early morning, failing which the intra city traffic is quite annoying. The best time to reach the highway is by 7:30 in the morning. After this the traffic increases considerably. My house is near BEML in Bangalore . I reached to Old Madras road and after a short journey took the elevated way towards Tumkoor road. Please avoid the bilanes or service roads as in some places near Bangalore the traffic is a pain in ass. Now the first coffee shop(CCD) will come after 65 kms from Bangalore(Other being too close to city is useless). Getting Highway dhabas is not an issue at all. No need to carry food stuff when entire highway is filled with eatables(unless you are sick, accompanying old people or have small kids). The roads are a bikers delight … smooth, broad and picturesque. Once you are on highways the city sequence sill be:
· Bangalore
· Tumkur
· Sira
· Hiriyur
· Chitradurga and finally
· Davangere
Chitadurga is a historical city and the fort is worth a visit. Have a visit if you have time. Beyond Chitradurha the windmills are really a amazing view. But soon you will get bored as they lay across the length and breadth of NH till Mumbai. The distance between Bangalore to Danangere is nearly 225 kms. Yes the toll booths are there but most of the places a motorcyclist need not to pay any toll tax as government of India respects the rider in us. Once you reach near Davangere, there will be a elevated way. You need to take the service road and then try to cross under the bridge . Once you are in the city ask someone for Davengere bus stand. It’s a bit far but then the city itself is quite small. For a non kannadiga like me, reading the signboards is a bit difficult as all are in local language. However, people give a warm welcome. You may ask to any shopkeeper or autorickshaw wala. They are the best HPS (Human Positioning System)
Once on this road(Also called as PB road). Just opposite to the bus stand there is a seemingly small shop called Abhinandan. This shop is near to Kamat. Try Abhoinandan only. The moment you step in the buttery aroma will take you away. Prices are very reasonable and hygiene is quite ok. Initially it is advisible to order only single benne dosa(unless your eating capacity is abnormally high …).
First let your eyes get a visual retreat and then let your tentacles feel the smooth flavor…finally taste the crispy golden delight with smoothness to touch all your senses in very first bite.
You will surely realize that very few eating stuff has the pride of being crispy yet floppy. Davanagere Benne Dosa is undoubtedly the best of all. Served with the traditonal cocunut white chutney (Far better than the Bangalore shops) and an additional thick butter cube is soul refreshing.
Soon I realised why Davanagere is termed as the southern heaven for veggies.
Oops, I also figured out as why all the beautiful girls are a bit chubby(No offence just kidding).
So to all fellow riders happy munching…because this weight gain is worth a life.
